There are a lot of claims thrown around when it comes to juice cleanses, and unfortunately many of them are just marketing ploys to get you buying more juice. For instance- there is no science that shows that we need to “detoxify” our bodies, or “give our digestive system a break.”
However. This doesn’t mean that juice cleanses are bad, or a waste of money. It just means that it might be time to rethink our reasons for drinking juices, and the benefits we are gaining from them. Below are the three main reasons I will keep reaching for the green juices (but hey, I work at Cooked, I have easy access 🙂 you do you.)
A juice cleanse can help you reset bad habits.
If you have fallen into a habit of 3pm candy bars, three drinks after dinner or too many meals that come with a side of fries- a juice cleanse might be helpful for you. Taking one to three days to drink just vitamin and antioxidant-filled fruit and veggie juices can help you to break mindless eating habits.
Most Americans don’t eat enough vegetables (or fruits!).
The CDC and USDA recommend that the average adult needs 1.5-2 cups of fruit per day and 2-3 cups of vegetables. During a study spanning from 2007-2010 76% of Americans surveyed did not meet fruit intake recommendations, and 87% did not meet vegetable intake recommendations
“Eating more fruits and vegetables adds nutrients to diets, reduces the risk for heart disease, stroke, and some cancers, and helps manage body weight when consumed in place of more energy-dense food” CDC.
The great thing about juice is that it makes those fruits and veggies easier to get. Its easily digestible, tasty and convenient.
They could maybe help you live longer?
Intermittent fasting is the practice of taking periods of time each day, each week or at longer intervals to refrain from eating food or drastically reducing calorie intake.
Research studies have shown that cutting calories by 15 to 40 percent is associated with a number of health benefits, including: lower risk of cardiovascular disease, protection against certain forms of cancer; healthier brain; healthier kidneys; and a longer life.
Doing a juice cleanse even just twice a year might help you to become healthier, loose weight, and improve your glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride levels. scientific american
